Students studying at the IMPRS-CS are not compelled to learn German, as English is the chosen language at the Max Planck Institutes and at the Saarland University’s Faculty of Computer Science. Those wishing to learn German because they need it in their daily lives can attend our German language courses. We also offer English courses.
The language courses have different levels of proficiency and are free of charge for everyone meeting our course requirements.
Please check our Course Requirements.
During the semester, classes take place once or twice a week. Please take a look at the current timetable.
New students can either join a German complete beginners or a more advanced course in German or English, whereas the latter is only possible, if these students take the placement test held at the start of the semester.
Registration for Placement Tests
Placement tests serve the purpose of finding the right level of language courses for each student. They are valid for two semesters. You need to register for a placement test if you:
- have taken a placement test more than 2 semesters ago, or
- have passed an IMPRS-CS language course more than 3 semesters ago
- have never taken a placement test or language course at IMPRS-CS.
Students who want to take DaF1 a/b can directly register for the language course. Registration for language courses will be accessible from Oct. 8th.
Placement tests will take place on:
Thursday, October 4th at 10 a.m., E1 4, R 024
Wednesday, October 10th at 10 a.m., E1 4, R 024
Wednesday, October 17th at 2 p.m., E2 5, Lecture Hall II

- want to register for DaF1

If you’d like to learn German while you are still in your home country, the Goethe Institute may be helpful: they offer German language courses all over the world.
