German and English Language Courses

Students studying at the IMPRS-CS are not compelled to learn German, as English is the chosen language at the Max Planck Institutes and at the Saarland University’s Faculty of Computer Science. Those wishing to learn German because they need it in their daily lives can attend our German language courses. We also offer English courses.
The language courses have different levels of proficiency and are free of charge for everyone meeting our course requirements.

Please check our Course Requirements.

During the semester, classes take place once or twice a week. Please take a look at the current timetable.
New students can either join a German complete beginners or a more advanced course in German or English, whereas the latter is only possible, if these students take the placement test held at the start of the semester.

Registration for Placement Tests

Placement tests serve the purpose of finding the right level language course for each student. They are valid for two semesters. You need to register for a placement test if you:

  • took an IMPRS-CS placement test more than 2 semesters ago, or
  • passed an IMPRS-CS language course more than 3 semesters ago, or
  • have never taken a placement test or language course at IMPRS-CS.

Students who want to take DaF1 a/b can register for the language course directly. Online registration for all language courses will be accessible starting October 16th.

Every test has a number. Students need their number to find their placement results online and to register for the correct course.

Placement tests will take place on:

Wednesday, October 2nd, 10 a.m., E1 4, room 024
Wednesday, October 9th, 2 p.m., E1 4, room 024
Tuesday, October 15th, 10 a.m., E1 4, room 021
