If you need a doctor during the night on weekdays or at any time on weekends and public holidays, you must call the emergency doctor service ("Ärztlicher Notdienst").
Telephone numbers for Saarbrücken are:
Monday till Friday: 0681 48038 and
weekends or public holidays: 0681 388 67-00.
When you call the emergency doctor service, the on-duty doctor will ask you how you are feeling. Based on the answers, the doctor will assess whether you should visit your own doctor the next day, whether a doctor should visit you at home, or whether you should go to the emergency doctor's surgery or to the hospital emergency room.
Only call the emergency doctor service when it is absolutely necessary or if you are really in doubt as to how sick you or your child might be!
In Germany, only vitamins, condoms, plasters and some dietary supplements are sold in drugstores (German: Drogeriemarkt). "Real" medicine (including painkillers) has to be bought at a pharmacy (German: Apotheke). Names of drugstores are e.g. dm and Schlecker. Drugstores can be found everywhere in the city, as well as in major department stores.
